I always knew that Frank was capable of terrible things, but I never thought that I’d actually see him stoop this low. The tension between Grant and Susan is so uncomfortable that I finally clear my throat, wanting more than anything to break the silence.

“We have a satellite phone in the attic that I bought for emergencies,” I tell Grant. There’s a flash of interest in his eyes and I latch onto it. “If you want to pull down the ladder you’re more than welcome to go up there and poke around. I just don’t have the strength to do it myself.”

“I can do that,” he says to me, giving Susan a quick glance before heading to the stairs. Part of me wants to ask him to stay here so that he can protect us if Frank comes back angry, but the other part of me can’t wait for him to leave. My heart drums out a staccato beat as I watch him leave the living room.

“Smart thinking on the sat phone, girl,” Susan says, leading me across the room to the sofa. “If he can find it up there then we can call an Uber and just get out of here. It’ll give us time to think things through and pick up what we need to make sure that Frank doesn’t bother you anymore.”

“There isn’t a sat phone,” I tell her heavily as I sit down on the sofa with a weary sigh. The adrenaline that was rushing through my body a moment ago has evaporated and I suddenly feel exhausted. When I gesture to the blanket next to me, Susan grabs it and flips it over me. The look on her face would make me laugh if I had the energy.

“You sent him on a wild goose chase?” she asks, snuggling next to me. When I nod, she continues. “Well, if we won’t be able to count on that getting us out of here, we might have to change our plan. I know that we thought about it from every angle, but I don’t know that we can get rid of him with Grant around.”

“No,” I agree, leaning my head back and closing my eyes, “but Frank definitely has some dirt on Grant, though. Want to find out what it is?”

“Of course I do.” Susan stares at the ceiling. “But how in the world are we going to do that?”

“Frank’s laptop,” I say, then I groan, smacking my head with the heel of my hand. “Why didn’t I think about that? We have internet and can probably book an Uber that way. It’s in his study, down the hall.”

Susan leaps up and runs out of the room, returning a moment later with the computer. It’s a top-of-the-line Mac, the newest model, of course, as he likes to update his toys every single year. When she opens it, it only takes a moment for the screen to glow to life.

She opens a browser window, but it’s blank. Leaning closer to her, I point at the screen.
